American band Pavement’s recent reunion is unlikely to yield any new material, according to their guitarist Scott Kannberg, better known as Spiral Stairs.
In an interview with the UK’s digital radio station XFM set for broadcast on their X-posure show tonight, Kannberg has said that the band’s reunion plans do not stretch beyond the autumn at this stage.
When asked about their future plans, he said: “Yeah, I don’t know. Ask me in September. We’ve all kind of planned it until September, October, but there might be more shows, people seem to like our band and if a cool show comes along where it sounds fun, we’ll probably end up doing it. I don’t know about recording anything, Pavement was good for its time and there’s just too much going on.”
Kannberg’s comments appear to contradict his mood in an interview with The Age at the end of last year, when he seemed ready to work on new tracks: “If it’s enjoyable for us, I think it is inevitable that we’ll make some more music,” he said in December. “I hope so because I think it will be fun. If I was a fan of the band I’d want to hear some new music, but we’re just going to see how it goes.”
After forming in California in 1989, Pavement’s brand of lo-fi indie rock garnered them a loyal cult following despite relatively little commercial success, and they have become recognised as one of the most influential US acts of the past twenty years. After the release of their fifth, and to date, final studio album ‘Terror Twilight’, the band disbanded in 1999.
The reunion recently included a best of collection, ‘Quarantine the Past: The Best of Pavement‘, which was released in March.
