While Adele‘s ‘25‘ is currently in the process of breaking all sales records, or so it feels like anyway, Michael Jackson‘s pop classic ‘Thriller‘ has given a timely reminder of what a real cultural phenomenon looks like by becoming the first album to go 30x platinum in the States.
“It is crystal clear that Michael Jackson is simply the greatest and biggest artist of all time,” Epic Records chairman and CEO LA Reid has said in a statement.
“Not only are his charts hits and sales stats staggering, but his pure musicality was other-worldly. ‘Thriller’ was groundbreaking and electrifying, it was perfection.”
“I am extremely proud that Michael is the heart and soul of Epic Records and he will forever remain the one-and-only King of Pop.”
Where ’25’ plays it safe and retreads old ground, ‘Thriller’ smashed sales records by taking pop stratospheric upon its release in November 1982, led by the world-wide hit of its title-track and the iconic, ground breaking video.
