Who?
Will Walter is the creator of Voyages and the lead singer, his twin brother Tim plays keys and sings backing vocals, their older brother Ollie plays guitar. Lewis and James Woods – another set of twins – are the rhythm section (James on drums, Lewis on bass).
Where?
Bath, the Roman City in England.
Why?
(Will Walter) Having been into music from a young age you tend to go through phases. I hit a point a few years ago where I just got really into classic songwriters and songs with a voice. People like Harry Nilsson, The Beatles, Nick Cave and Brian Wilson are the masters at that. Sonically it’s a different story. I can get really into the sound of a track regardless of genre. Right now we’re playing a lot of Father John Misty, Paul Simon and the new Twin Peaks stuff is ace.
How?
I initially wrote and produced a couple of songs in a garage studio. When I wanted to take them out live it needed fleshing out so we built this band around those songs. We have all know each other for a long time – some of us more than others obviously.
Past?
We have all had, and still have, various bands and jobs that are the making of what we do. The strangest job I ever had was working in a sex toy factory in Bath – I felt I had to leave once I became numb to the comedic value of a ball gag after seeing too many on a daily basis.
Present?
Our main aim is to write songs that are timeless, we try not to imitate any current trends and simply make music that we would listen to ourselves. We’ve been likened to The Beatles on record which is a huge compliment. We’ve been working on interesting vocal harmonies recently which work really well live when Tim and I sing them, as we are twins and have the ‘same voice’.
Future?
Go on a Voyage…
Did you know?
During the creation, Voyages played under various pseudonyms around the country. One of the gigs Will fell ill on route and Tim stepped out from behind the keys to be lead singer for the night. Thankfully there’s no footage of it…we hope.
What’s next?
We hope to get an album out at some point this year – we are constantly in and out of the studio and are making some great sounds. More live shows would be great especially hitting up some festivals. Hope to see people out there on Voyage.
Live4ever:
Here’s a question, what would an angry George Harrison sound like? Wonder no more – Voyages may just have invented their own genre, passive-aggressive rock, music which shuffles with beauty, bristles with inspiration and is full of wonder, all shrouded in folksy beauty.
Voyages’ morose and often back-handed topics are a magnificent backdrop for some genuinely uplifting songs that owe as much to Harrison as they do Devendra Banhart, Edward Sharpe or even The Beach Boys. They are the musical equivalent of a seaside postcard painted by Monet. Fun, a little lewd, but nothing short of majestic to experience.
It all adds up to a band that perfectly blends humour, intelligence and brilliant music to create something quite extraordinary.
