Burt Bacharach was 94.
Songwriters including Brian Wilson and Noel Gallagher have been leading the tributes to Burt Bacharach after the celebrated pop composer’s death was announced by his publicist yesterday.
“RIP Maestro,” Gallagher wrote on social media. “It was a pleasure to have known you.”
Dionne Warwick, who produced arguably the definitive versions of Walk On By and I’ll Never Fall In Love Again, described the news as like, ‘losing a family member’, while a Twitter post from Brian Wilson reads:
“I’m so sad to hear about Burt Bacharach. Burt was a hero of mine and very influential on my work. He was a giant in the music business. His songs will live forever. Love & Mercy to Burt’s family.”
Along with lyricist Hal David, Bacharach formed one of the greatest songwriting partnerships of the 20th century, invariably bringing a classical, baroque sensibility to pop music on an arsenal of classics which also includes I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself, I Say A Little Prayer, This Guy’s In Love With You and the Oscar winning Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head.
