Adele‘s smash hit second album ‘21‘ has become the first album to sell more than five million copies in a calendar year in the US since 2004, claims Reuters.
The reports suggest Adele has sold a massive 5.6 million units of ’21’ this year in the United States, a figure only matched most recently by R&B star Usher, who achieved similar sales in 2004 with his record ‘Confessions‘.
“In 2004, you had one massive album driving sales. This year is similar in that you have one really great story that everyone is talking about.” commented David Bakula of Nielsen Soundscan, the organisation which compiled the report. Nielsen also revealed an increase in overall music sales of 3% when compared to 2010, while digital sales are predicted to have sharply risen once again during the course of the past twelve months.
Originally released in January 2011, ’21’ primarily took off in the UK following Adele’s live performance of ‘Someone Like You‘ at the Brit Awards.
