Ric Ocasek, lead singer of The Cars, has died at the age of 75.

The New York Police Department have said he was found unresponsive at his home in Manhattan yesterday after a call from his family. A cause of death has yet to be revealed.

Together with Benjamin Orr, Ocasek formed The Cars in the mid-seventies and would go on to have consistent success with the band throughout the following decade. After their split in 1988, he forged a new path as a much sought after producer, working on albums with the likes of Weezer and Guided By Voices.

“The Weezer family is devastated by the loss of our friend and mentor Ric Ocasek, who passed away Sunday,” that band has said on social media.

“We will miss him forever and will forever cherish the precious times we got to work and hang out with him. Rest in peace and rock on Ric, we love you.”
