New York’s world-famous CBGB nightclub, the spiritual home of the city’s influential seventies punk scene which closed in 2006, looks set for a revival after a group of investors bought the venue’s name and assets with a view to launching a new music festival this summer.
The festival is expected to be followed by the opening of a brand new CBGB away from its former Bowery home, reports the New York Times, with one investor, Tim Hayes, explaining:
“We’re never going to recreate that moment in time. We’re trying to continue the idea of supporting live music, making a lot of noise and being a part of New York City. The festival is one way we can do it. Eventually the club will be another way we can do it.”
The four-day festival preceding CBGB’s planned relaunch will begin on July 5th, with a free Central Park show featuring the likes of Guided by Voices, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Cloud Nothings amongst the series of events.
