Happy Mondays frontman Shaun Ryder has appeared to rule out the possibility of a new album accompanying their reunion plans.
The band rubber-stamped their comeback tour late last month, confirming a series of UK dates which will commence in May. However, when talking to XFM, Ryder has stated his belief that pop songs ‘are written by young people’, suggesting the reformed band will instead concentrate on giving fans a nostalgic greatest hits experience when they perform live.
“Pop songs – or whatever you want to call them – are written by young people and when you’re young those songs are easy to write,” Ryder said. “If you look at any great artist once they go past late 30s the songs, they just aren’t there.”
Ryder’s comments are in stark contrast to those of fellow Mancunian reformers The Stone Roses, who immediately proclaimed their own intentions to write and record new material upon their return as they now gear up for a busy 2012.
