Returning from the depths of time and Suffolk, it’s been hard to miss The Darkness thus far in 2012.
A skit of their very own on Funny Or Die, touring jaunts back and forth across the pond, the ‘Hot Cakes‘ record announced and now another raucous, ballsy single to follow the bicycle-obsessed ‘Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us‘ and the salacious ‘Every Inch of You‘.
It’s well known that they love a bit of Thin Lizzy, and they clearly want their own version of ‘The Boys Are Back In Town‘. This is very much that sort of party-time anthem, but the points the song loses for originality it soon earns back tenfold for raw power of execution. ‘Everybody Have A Good Time‘ is all about fun; but this isn’t Cyndi Lauper’s idea of it. Growling with a foot-stomping riff and snarling, squealing guitar solos, this for an under-rated, under-catered-to audience.
This is for the rockers at the back of the room, tired of being told they’re party-poopers because they can’t bring themselves to dance to whatever bubbly, auto-tuned guff is on the loudspeakers. Like the band’s previous hit ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love‘, this is a call to arms for metalheads with a sense of humour. When it’s time to party, they will party hard. They will also shamelessly quote Andrew WK songs, but that’s quite another matter.
Now, to the band’s recent video-making antics. Following on from dinosaurs and spaceships and the strange mating rituals betwixt the two, the new video is appropriately bizarre, telling the heartwarming story of a stripper bear who accidentally solves the recession. Her financier bosses enslave her and force her at gunpoint to balance all their ledgers from now on.
The Darkness (for it is they), whilst playing a corporate gala gig, stumble across the bear’s plight in a dungeon. Justin and the lads decide this will not stand, coming to the rescue with their guitar-based brawling skills. The lads cop it from machine gun fire, but Justin and the stripper bear escape to freedom and what looks like it might turn into third base. Aww.
‘Everybody Have A Good Time’ is such a delightfully silly video, you wonder why we haven’t seen anything like it for so long. It’s just the sort of barmy 4-minute skit Foo Fighters used to offer, back in their ‘Learn To Fly‘ days. Now it falls to the boys from Lowestoft to provide the bears tossing frilly knickers at businessmen, and boy, have they done us proud. They’re no actors, but what with material as unashamedly daft and catchy as this, who the hell cares?
Get up on the table and dance, you mad dancing fools.
