As understated as ever, on Thursday evening The Flaming Lips joined in the week-long celebrations at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York which have been marking 50 years since The Beatles‘ US television debut on the Ed Sullivan Show. Joined by Sean Lennon, the band covered the legendary ‘Sgt. Peppers…’ album track ‘Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds‘ – have a watch below.
Various musicians have been performing live covers on the Late Show…with David Letterman this week in the build up to the Golden anniversary of the Fab Four’s world-changing first television appearance in the States. Flying in to JFK Airport for their maiden North American tour on February 7th, 1964 just as Beatlemania was getting a grip across the Atlantic, The Beatles made their bow on the Ed Sullivan Show two days later.
Exactly 50 years on, that broadcast will be honoured with a Grammy Awards TV special entitled The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute To The Beatles.
