David Bowie‘s second album – which in the early seventies was re-released as ‘Space Oddity‘ – has reportedly just become the most expensive album in Discogs’ history.
It’s an original vinyl pressing, when the LP was still self-titled, which has broken the record after it sold on the website for $6,826, continuing a trend of increasing interest in Bowie’s back catalogue since his death at the start of this year, Ron Rich – Discog’s marketing director – has said (via The Guardian).
“As morbid as it sounds, there is usually a bump in sales in the marketplace for a given artist when they pass,” Rich stated. “Collectors look to grab that piece of history, they want to own that a piece of the story.”
“There are a finite number of that album and even fewer that were released under the title David Bowie – find one in good condition and you can relive that moment when you first listened to it. It’s tough to put a monetary value on that.”
