Johnny Marr’s short run of UK gigs last week culminated at Manchester’s Old Trafford Cricket Ground.

Johnny Marr had been warming up for his outdoor gig in support of The Courteeners with shows in Leeds and Blackburn before arriving in London on September 23rd not long after the details of his new solo album had been confirmed.

“Spirit, Power And Soul is a kind of mission statement,” he said of its lead single. “I had an idea about an electro sound with gospel feeling, in my own word: an electro soul anthem.”

It’s the successor to Call The Comet – a Live4ever album of the year in 2018; “The whole album is peppered with effects and unearthly rhythms,” our review reads.

“Actor Attractor has synths that hark back toth Electronic days, and album centrepiece Walk Into The Sea offers ninety seconds of a variety of instruments all backed by a nagging pulse before it kicks into life with a sky-scraping, windswept, ear-consuming sound. As a contrast, Marr talks rather than sings throughout the song in a defiant tone.”
