On a cool breezy early May evening bustling youths could be found littering the streets of Leamington Spa; they’re dressed like culture guzzling scenesters as they drink from cans and draw breath between cigarette draughts in an air of anticipation. The Assembly Hall stands modestly amidst a diner and a nightclub, a short distance from the central parade.

Word of a surprise concert by Peter Dohertey’s indie rebels Baby Shambles quickly spread via Twitter yesterday afternoon (02/02) and then was confirmed on the band’s official myspace page. It went off in true Babyshambles fashion: off the cuff, highly energetic and definitely one for the fans! I was thankfully one of the lucky few who managed to get in and what a great set it was too. We were treated to 5 new songs last night and also played a collection of old favourites which included ‘Pipedown‘, ‘French Dog Blues‘ & ‘Delivery‘.

Peter Doherty has revealed Babyshambles have begun working on a new album.
Speaking to French radio station Inter, he said: “”Even as we speak, at this very moment in London somewhere, Mr Michael Whitnall – my erstwhile guitarist and songwriting partner in Babyshambles – is getting the demos together for our new album. He’s got most of the tunes ready, I’ve just got to write the lyrics now.” Doherty also said he expects Stephen Street, who produced the band’s previous album, to be behind the desk for the new record. When asked if Street would be involved, Doherty simply said: “I think so, he’s a geezer.”
After leaving The Libertines in 2004, Doherty turned his attention to Babyshambles, which had started as a side-project following his initial problems with The Libertines in 2003. Towards the end of 2005, the band released their debut album, ‘Down In Albion‘ which entered the UK Top 10. After signing to Parlophone Records in 2006, a second album, ‘Shotter’s Nation‘, was released in 2007 and recieved a warm response from critics.
Doherty has also spoken about his recent arrests, which have come at a time when his much documented drug problems were reported to be under control. “I’ve kind of just come out of a bit of a car crash,” he said. “I got nicked in England, arrested again, and since then I’ve had to go to rehab. Since then, I’m clean, the last 11 days I’ve been clean for the first time in quite a long time.”
Surprise surprise , the NME reports that Babyshambles frontman Peter Doherty was arrested for Drug possesion and DWI last night. Pete had just finished a gig in Gloucester.
The Babyshambles singer was taken into custody by police after he was seen driving erratically around the city. He was stopped roughly 30 minutes after finishing a solo performance at the Guildhall venue.
A spokesman said for Gloucester police told the Wilts And Gloucestershire Standard that drugs were also found in the possession of the 30-year-old man who was arrested.
“At approximately 12.30am officers on patrol in Eastgate Street saw a car being driven erratically, it continued down Barton Street and was stopped in Derby Road,” the spokesperson said. “A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drink driving, possession of drugs and failure to stop for police, he remains in custody at this time.”
Pete Doherty’s show tonight (June 11) at the Derby Rockhouse has been cancelled
Shouldn’t he just give up driving all together?
