Florence & The Machine will release a new single, ‘Drumming Song‘ on September 7th. It will be the fifth single to be lifted from new album ‘Lungs’.
The band, made up of singer Florence Welch and a variety of backing musicians, rose to prominence after being chosen by the BBC for their ‘BBC Introducing’ series, which led to appearances by the group at the Glastonbury and Reading/Leeds Festivals. At the 2009 Brits, the band won the Critics Choice award for ‘new band most likely to make it big in 2009’.
Their debut album and it’s subsequent singles were recorded on a tight budget, and have received widespread acclaim from critics. Florence outlined the minimalist approach to recording while speaking about previous single ‘Dog Days Are Over’: “It just feels bizarre,” she said. “It was just a song that I did at my friend’s studio in Crystal Palace. We didn’t have any instruments and we were in a studio the size of a loo. All the drums were done by like banging on walls and endless vocal tracks tuned into this big screaming mess.
The journey from Crystal Palace to the ears of someone on the motorway or another city, it’s strange.”
Florence has developed a reputation as a very energetic live performer. Speaking to the Telegraph newspaper in June about her live performances she said: “Singing can be really exhausting, I love that sense of release as you throw yourself into the crowd as hundreds of arms are carrying you.”
The band will embark on a tour of the UK in September.
