Live Review: Dry Cleaning at Bristol Louisiana

Posted on 05 Mar 2020 at 10:07am

There may have been a storm battering the UK for the third weekend in a row, but inside the small Bristol Louisiana (Feb 29th) there’s sweat dripping from every attendee’s pores.

Dry Cleaning are slowly but surely building up a dedicated fanbase having recently taken up a mini-residency on BBC 6 Music, and it’s not hard to ascertain why: there’s nothing else like them at this point in time. The musicianship isn’t especially original (consisting as it does of guitar, bass and drums) nor are Florence Shaw’s insights about the mundanity of life, but the delivery is unique.

It’s hopefully not doing Shaw a disservice to say that she isn’t really a singer, more a quasi-poet raging against elements of 21st century life, albeit in tone rather than volume or animation. The frontwoman is zen-like in her performance, at various points either staring blankly into the middle distance or looking quizzically at the audience, perhaps surprised that we are so entranced. Like Liam Gallagher she has made a lack of movement beguiling.

Live4ever’s Best Of 2019: The Tracks

Posted on 10 Dec 2019 at 6:58am

On our Best Albums list, 2019 brought us future classics from Fontaines D.C., Dave, The Murder Capital, FEET, slowthai and black midi to name just a few. Those and plenty more feature too on our favourite tracks of the year.

Picked out by editor David Smith from the hundreds which have featured on these pages during the past twelve months, Sinead O’Brien, Dry Cleaning, Black Country New Road, Kate Tempest and Working Men’s Club are just some who have added to a year which, whilst nostalgia has continued its grip on the mainstream, has quietly created a vintage all of its own.

Review: Dry Cleaning – Boundary Road Snacks And Drinks EP

Posted on 31 Oct 2019 at 9:49am

It’s testament to how quickly the germination of Scene 2019 – a terrible name, but it doesn’t really have anything else to go by – has so radically transformed the genre formally known as indie, such that an EP featuring lyrics delivered as brittle non-sequiturs seems unremarkable.

And yet Dry Cleaning – a four-piece from south London made up of Lewis Maynard, Tom Dowse, Florence Shaw and Nick Buxton – have succeeded in doing just that, opening up a new vector amongst the vibrant, post-everything bricolage of ideas with their hashing together of abstract poetry and bittersweet tunes.

Prior to the arrival of Shaw – a university lecturer by day – the trio wrote instrumentally before she began delivering her words as prose in a deadpan but somehow exhilarating monotone that became the ideal vessel for their erratic pop.
