Richard Ashcroft had been due to top the bill with The Streets and Royal Blood.

Richard Ashcroft has shown his support for the beleaguered live music industry in the UK by withdrawing from his headline booking at Tramlines.

Whilst many other events had been forced to cancel their summer plans for a second year in a row due to the inaction and lack of support from the UK government, Tramlines’ place on the Events Research Programme had at least secured its own viability for 2021, bringing with it all the economic rewards to the local community which are so badly needed right now, and which will help to ensure we have events such as this one to keep going back to once something closer to normality returns.

But alas, it’s the place on the Research Programme which has triggered the Verve frontman into making this decision.

“Apologies to my fans for any disappointment but the festival was informed over 10 days ago that I wouldn’t be playing once it had become part of a government testing programme,” he’s written on social media.

“I had informed my agent months ago I wouldn’t be playing concerts with restrictions. The status of the festival was one thing when I signed up for it, but, sadly was forced to become something else. It must be an age thing but the words Government Experiment and Festival.”
