Despite being a last minute replacement for country singer Morgan Wallen, Jack White typically brought the goods as the musical guest of Saturday Night Live during the weekend.

While ostensibly pointing towards the recent announcement of the first White Stripes greatest hits collection by performing that band’s 2003 track Ball And Biscuit, there was much more to the appearance than that, from drawing on his encyclopedic knowledge of old time blues and gospel music to make some timely comments on the pandemic, to a very personal Eddie Van Halen tribute after the legendary guitarist passed away last week.

“The guitar was designed by Eddie (with a few customizations I had added),” White explained on Instagram. “Eddie was very kind to me and saw to it that this guitar was made for me to my specs. I won’t even insult the man’s talent by trying to play one of his songs tonight. Thanks again eddie for this guitar and rest in peace sir.”
