Mick Fleetwood and Stevie Nicks have both been paying tribute to Fleetwood Mac’s legendary former guitarist Peter Green, who passed away last weekend at the age of 73.

His family confirmed the news on July 25th, writing that he died, ‘peacefully in his sleep’.

Peter Green was a founder member of Fleetwood Mac in 1967 and in the group’s early days established himself as one of the great British blues guitarists. He left in 1970 – before the gradual transition to the classic seventies rock sound which would by the middle of that decade make them one of the biggest bands in the world – but his lasting influence has not been forgotten by both those who shared time with him in Fleetwood Mac and those who followed.

‘No one has ever stepped into the ranks of Fleetwood Mac without a reverence for Peter Green and his talent’, Mick Fleetwood has told Rolling Stone, while Stevie Nicks said her biggest regret is having never got to share a stage with him.

“It was in the beginning, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac and I thank you, Peter Green, for that,” she concluded. “You changed our lives.”
