Our pick of the week’s new tracks is Thalassophobia, a thumping slice of club electronica from Berlin-based producer and artist Nicolas Bougaïeff.

Bougaïeff will release The Upward Spiral, his debut album for Mute, on July 24th after a run of EPs and singles on labels including the minimal techno imprint Trapez since 2013.

“It’s about looking inwards,” he says of Thalassophobia. “It’s a Greek word that means fear of depth, actually literally it’s fear of water, but it’s the fear of unfathomable depths,” Bougaïeff explains. “I’m pointing to the fear of depths; both literal and metaphorical. It’s a beautiful word that has attracted me going back years.”
