Live4ever Presents: Black Doldrums

Black Doldrums

Who?

Kevin: I play guitar and sing, Sophia plays the drums and synth.

Where?

K: We’re from London.

Why?

K. My main influences are from all sorts of things. Musically I grew up on The Beatles, The Stones and Motown, and when I was very young Oasis were in the background which helped open up knowledge about other bands and you just go from there! 60’s psychedelia makes a lot of sense to me because it’s got a lot of different influences and depth.

S: I have fairly varied influences as well, I like listening to a lot of dark wave/goth and shoegaze, but I also really enjoy listening to big soundtracks, I like a lot of Ennio Morricone and I also really like 1920’s clarinet music like Artie Shaw and modern jazz.

How?

K: We’ve known each other for a while and had always connected over music, but it wasn’t until one night in the pub that we decided to do something with our shared passion. We actually originally intended on finding other members but the more we played together just the two of us we started to develop different ideas, and it felt right and easy so we stuck to it.

Past?

K. I’ve had about 50 jobs already! Not capable of doing anything else.

S: I’ve never been in a band until now, I did try to form one a few years ago but we only had two rehearsals and we were terrible.

Present?

K. I’d say it’s rock and roll with a bit of added depth. Multi-layered. I like to keep things simple too so it’s instant! In my opinion it should be easily accessible to all with some added extras for most.

S: Epic.

Future?

K. I’d say to be famous but that’s kind of what’s wrong with most people and other artists. Fame should be a by-product of being successful, so to avoid this generation’s self entitlement issues, I’d say I want us to be successful and earn it.

S: Just to keep creating music that people enjoy and staying innovative with every product we make. I want to be respected and successful as an artist.

Did you know?

S: Kicking a grenade down the Thames?

Live4ever:

Who doesn’t need more dramatic atmospheric rock in their life? Black Doldrums are the latest flame carriers of brooding, atmospheric, guitar-driven apocalyptic soundscapes. Spiritual children of Shields and the Reid brothers, their music requires commitment and is not for the faint-hearted, but reveals itself to have a shimmering beauty at its heart, hidden beneath the cacophonous drumming and echo-drenched guitar.

EP opener There Is No Eye has a sense of doom, while on the wonderfully titled It’s A Dandy Massacre singer Kevin Gibbard, with his distant vocals, accompanies the music rather than the other way round. It’s confrontational, claustrophobic and compelling.
