A year on from the self-release of his debut single Play God, Sam Fender is reflecting on a bold decision: “It all just came to a halt when I was 19,” he tells us at the 2018 SXSW Live4ever Media Lounge. “I just took a big break, just to write because I didn’t feel like I’d found what I wanted to be, and I didn’t feel that I had a strong identity with what I was doing back then.”

“So I just went and sat in a shed for about a year-and-a-half and wrote loads of songs. And I think I found what I wanted. We had an idea to bring out an EP and that didn’t happen. And then I was like, ‘I’ve got this little idea but I don’t know what I’m going to do with it’. The song I had in mind was too different to the stuff that I was originally going to release, and it was Play God.”
