Live4ever’s Best Of 2016: The Bay Rays reflect on New Home

When Live4ever featured The Bay Rays as part of our Presents series back in June, New Home was lauded as being ‘the joy of the single defined’.

To the present day, and with the nights very much drawn in and winter’s frost very much in hold, the track is still retaining those virtues. Still as sing-along-able as then, still with an unavoidable darker underbelly, a biographical tale elevating it beyond mere pop. And since our Tracks rundown is all about the joy of the single and the old delight of having three-minute gems on repeat ad infinitum, it was only ever going to be New Home which would top this year’s countdown.

Here, the band give Live4ever a quick rundown of how our number one song of 2016 first sparked into life, and what the band’s plans are for the New Year.

“New Home came from a period in my life where I was moving around a lot and eventually forced out of living above a pub in Kent,” frontman Harry Nicoll tells us. “The genesis of the song came from there but it built up over time, I lived in London before that and couldn’t afford it, so reset in Kent which also proved difficult.”

“A lot happened for us this year which we couldn’t believe, from playing Glastonbury to being on the Radio 1 playlist to touring all over the country, we just hope we can continue with the same momentum going into 2017,” he continues on 2016 and into 2017.

“We have a new single coming out at the beginning of the year followed by a tour and an E.P going into the spring and kick on from there. We want to make it our year.”

And on the upcoming festive season, Harry concludes: “Christmas will be spent with families, then us mates get together on Boxing Day. Last New Year we were playing covers in a small pub for some cash but this time round we won’t be, will most likely be propped up in a bar somewhere.”
