The Inspiral Carpets have confirmed the death of their drummer Craig Gill.

A statement released today across social media from the band reads:

“It’s with heavy hearts that we announced the death of our drummer and close friend Craig Gill. We are all absolutely devasted by the news. Craig was our brother.”

“We were honoured to work along side him for the last 30 years. To say we’ll miss him is an understatement.”

Gill was a founder member of the band when it formed in Oldham in 1983, and with them enjoyed a commercial rise around the time of the late eighties/early nineties Madchester movement.

Tributes are already being paid from the music world, Liam Gallagher writing on Twitter that he is ‘stunned’ by the news, while bandmate Clint Boon echoed the above statement by remembering Gill as, ‘the beating heart of the Inspirals in more ways than one’.
