Classic Rock magazine has named Jimmy Page‘s guitar solo on Stairway To Heaven as the greatest of all time.
The famous piece of work, which brings the slow building Led Zeppelin rock classic to a spine-tingling crescendo, was picked for the publication by a panel of critics, bands and readers, pushing the iconic Comfortably Numb by David Gilmour into second place.
As for Jimmy Page, he believes he’s done better…
“Is Stairway To Heaven my best Zeppelin guitar solo?” he pondered. “No, but it’s pretty damn good. The solo was done very quickly – in actual fact there were already layers underneath, the bottleneck you can hear was on before the solo.”
“If everyone else says it’s my best solo then that’s great, that’s good, but there are others that I prefer.”
Top 10 guitar solos of all time (Classic Rock):
1/ Jimmy Page, Stairway To Heaven
2/ Dave Gilmour, Comfortably Numb
3/ Don Felder and Joe Walsh, Hotel California
4/ Allen Collins, Freebird
5/ Jimi Hendrix, All Along The Watchtower
6/ Eddie Van Halen, Eruption
7/ Brian May, Killer Queen
8/ Slash, Sweet Child O’ Mine
9/ Prince, Purple Rain
10/ Tony Iommi, Paranoid
As a guitar player for 36 years that has been learning Page’s solos my whole life I would agree. The solo on Stairway has such great feeling and soul. I would put Page’s solo on Heartbreaker a close second.
I agree.. Jimmy Page is the best on any solo that he has ever done period!
Jimmy makes all of his solos a thing of great beauty. He is a genius!
That’s a pretty good list but as mentioned I think Page has done better IMHO “Thank You” from the BBC sessions album tops the lot
