The music world is reacting, of course, en masse to this morning’s news that David Bowie has died at the age of 69 after an 18-month battle with cancer.

Tony Visconti, a long-term collaborator of Bowie’s and the producer of his final studio album ‘Blackstar‘, said in a statement on Facebook, ‘for now, it is appropriate to cry’.

“He always did what he wanted to do,” the statement reads. “And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. His death was no different from his life – a work of Art. He made ‘Blackstar’ for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn’t, however, prepared for it. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life.”

“He will always be with us. For now, it is appropriate to cry.”

Iggy Pop, a big part of Bowie’s life particularly during the legendary Berlin Trilogy period, said on Twitter:

“David’s friendship was the light of my life. I never met such a brilliant person. He was the best there is.”

And countless more musicians and personalities from across the entertainment industry have been paying their own tributes.

Writing on Instagram, Noel Gallagher echoed the passing of another musical icon by declaring, ‘the King is dead’, while Kanye West said Bowie was, ‘so fearless, so creative’ and Ricky Gervais noted that he’s, ‘just lost a hero’.
