Ringo Starr to auction his first copy of The White Album for charity

White Album

Ringo Starr is selling his first ever pressing of The White Album in aid of his wife Barbara Bach’s Lotus Foundation.

Julien’s Auctions, which is based in Beverly Hills and will take on the sale, estimates the record could fetch up to $60,000 when it goes under the hammer early next month.

Released towards the end of 1968, The Beatles‘ self-titled double album was initially met with puzzled faces from critics, but is now rightly regarded as one of the group’s crowning achievements, a glorious rag-bag collection from what by then were increasingly estranged band mates, each taking their own journeys through a staggering variety of genres and styles.

It offers treats of delightful whimsy and genuine classics at every turn as the Fab Four entered their final months together. Indeed Ringo Starr had left the band briefly during the album’s recording, only to return soon after to find Abbey Road and his drumkit decked out in flowers.
