You know the drill by now: take a well known song. Add some oh-so impassioned, airy vocals. Strip everything back bar a bit of piano. Set it all to a sentimental festive themed tale. Hopefully make a lot of money.

It’s happened to the likes of John Lennon and The Smiths in the past, and now the John Lewis Christmas advert for 2015 has been unveiled on YouTube, this time soundtracked by Norwegian singer Aurora covering the Oasis b-side ‘Half The World Away‘ – with those predictable vocals and minimalist piano licks all present and correct.

At the moment, the biggest impact for Oasis fans seems to be that all original versions of the song have been pulled from YouTube. It’s been one of many popular b-sides amongst those fans since it was first released, again at Christmas time, on the single ‘Whatever‘ back in 1994.

It then gained a much wider audience in 1998 when it was picked to open the hugely popular sitcom The Royle Family, becoming a regular presence on the band’s live sets from then until their split in 2009. The song has remained on the stage with Noel Gallagher fairly regularly since he launched a solo career in 2011.
