Jamie Hewlett confirms involvement in Gorillaz return

Jamie Hewlett is apparently on board with a return for Gorillaz after posting a series of visuals on his Instagram feed over the weekend.

The man behind the cartoon band’s artwork signalled his return with a picture of Murdoc, and later simply declared: “Yes. Gorillaz Returns.” This comes after Damon Albarn told the Sydney Morning Herald last October that he was ‘in the process of reactivating’ the band which last released an album in 2011.

It also puts to bed any possibility of Albarn working on new Gorillaz material without the artistic exploits of Hewlett – something which he discussed with Shortlist back in 2012.

“It was very much Jamie did the visuals and I did the music,” he said. “The music won’t change, so there could be another Gorillaz record tomorrow. It wouldn’t necessarily have Murdoc – the cartoon aspect to it – but musically no, nothing’s changed whatsoever.”

“Jamie wants to do other things and I understand. But you never know, in a few years he might have a burning desire to draw those pictures again, and as soon as he does that, as far as I’m concerned, there could be another Gorillaz album.”
