Carl Barat: Libertines reunion still needs to be taken ‘step by step’

It’s pretty astonishing just how healthy the Libertines camp seems to be at the moment.

After their live return last July for British Summer Time, there’s been more festival gigs, a full blown European tour and plans for a new album. And if all that wasn’t enough, Pete Doherty is apparently finally coming to terms with his drug demons after a stint in Thailand rehabilitation.

Yet, despite all these positives, Carl Barat has cautioned fans to not become too used to the band’s new found serenity, and warned that the recording of a third album still needs to be taken ‘step by step’.

“You can’t make plans with The Libertines because they usually go wrong,” he told Loaded. “I’m seeing Pete in Thailand again soon, but everything in the band has to be taken step-by-step. The new album has to be the right record, and we don’t want to rush it.”

“The Libertines have always been about anthems to doomed youth,” he continued on the theme of their new material. “I’m not entirely sure how happy the new songs will be lyrically, but the message is strong in the new songs. It’s doomed youth overcoming hardships with optimism.”

The Libertines were unveiled as headliners for the 2015 T In The Park festival last week, while Barat releases his debut album with The Jackals later this month.
