Townhouse Studios in London – where Pulp recorded their brilliant 1995 album ‘Different Class‘, where The Jam worked on ‘Setting Sons‘, and where others such as Oasis, Muse, Coldplay and Blur also frequented – is no more.

The studio, built as part of Richard Branson’s Virgin Records empire in 1978, has been sold for £7.5 million and is now going to be turned into luxury flats which are expected to be worth up to £2 million each upon completion.

The studio has been closed since 2008 but quoted in the Evening Standard, rock historian Adrian Bray has said it is nevertheless ‘sad when our historical heritage slowly slips from view’.

“All the iconic musical venues are disappearing,” Bray added. “The Townhouse is not a beautiful building and its economic life is clearly over yet it’s significant. The fact is that if the council let Hammermsith Palais disappear without a backward glance, this place didn’t have a chance.”
