Alex Turner ‘not sure’ Metallica and Glastonbury ‘adds up’

Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner has questioned whether the sum of the hard rock leanings of Metallica and the more laid back, antiquated surroundings of Glastonbury will add up to a successful headline gig for the band next month.

Similar to Jay-Z in 2008 and Beyonce in 2011 – who both went on to perform rapturously received shows – Metallica’s booking for Glastonbury 2014 has been met with some murmurings as to whether they will be a comfortable fit for Worthy Farm, doubts Turner has now added to during an interview with Time Out.

“I’m not sure it adds up,” he said. “I know we’d buzz off it, but fundamentally could you have Metallica in the hippy nucleus?”

When his group was confirmed to be joining Kasabian and Arcade Fire for this year’s event, Metallica’s drummer Lars Ulrich promised festival-goers they will be focusing on ‘putting something suitable together’ for the famous Pyramid Stage.

“Trust your friendly neighbourhood Metallica, we’ll put something suitable together,” he told BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe. “It’s great that, 32 years into our career, we’re still able to knock down doors – doors we didn’t think were open to us.”
