The Kinks’ Dave Davies reflects on ‘toxic’ relationship with brother Ray

Dave Davies has been discussing the ‘toxic’ relationship with his brother Ray which has now been familiar to music fans for half a century.

British rock’s original warring brothers soldiered on until 1996 when The Kinks played their last show, but hopes are high that there could be reconciliation at some point this year to mark the iconic band’s 50th anniversary. This despite Dave outlining the extent to which the siblings’ relationship still sparks deep lying friction.

“What’s that fable about Cain and Abel? I can’t quite remember the details of the dysfunction,” he told the Independent. “But I don’t want to be stuck in there, having jealousy and hatred and envy and being unhappy. And being with Ray for too long gets me back in that cycle. But then, families are difficult, and you can learn from discomfort. Ray and I have been each other’s most important teachers. Maybe that’s the clue to the whole relationship.”

“It’s like some people prefer me and Ray to be at each other’s throats than to be brothers. In my 30s and 40s, I resented the fact that Ray gave me so little credit for my input and creativity. But my love has always been relentlessly directed towards him.”

Back in January, Ray Davies said a reunion is ‘closer than it’s ever been‘ after apparently positive family meetings last summer.
