Savages Jehnny Beth: ‘Mercury Prize nomination doesn’t change anything’

‘Being nominated or not doesn’t make you a better band, it doesn’t change anything’, writes Savages frontwoman Jehnny Beth, who has taken to her Tumblr page to reflect on the band’s Mercury Prize nomination.

Savages’ debut ‘Silence Yourself‘ made the cut when the nominees were announced last month, but Beth’s blog post doesn’t anticipate the extra publicity, and often prestige, which comes with the annual prize to have an impact on the band.

“If there is a lesson I am taking from this, and maybe you will care for it too, it is this one: whatever happens, do whatever the fuck you want,” she writes. “Being nominated or not doesn’t make you a better band, it doesn’t change anything, musicians of our generation don’t earn millions the way they used to in the past, we simply don’t have anything to lose.”

David Bowie, Disclosure and Foals are considered the favourites for this year’s Mercury Prize. The winner is revealed at the London Roundhouse on October 30th.
