Jake Bugg has said his nomination for the 2013 Mercury Prize ‘doesn’t mean a whole lot’.

Bugg has been named on the shortlist for the award thanks to his self-titled debut solo album, and goes up against 11 other nominated acts when the Mercury ceremony takes place in London on October 30th.

“It’s great to be nominated, but the Mercurys don’t mean a whole lot to me – that’s not why I make music, to get awards,” Bugg told the Coventry Telegraph. “I make albums for people to listen to. I started writing songs in the hope they could mean something, could help someone, could inspire someone, could make someone’s day. That’s the best thing in the world for me.”

Ahead of the winner’s announcement next week, Disclosure‘s ‘Settle‘ remains the bookies favourite, while David Bowie, Foals and Laura Marling are all still at short odds. Laura Mvula is one act to have emerged from the pack during recent weeks, and is now 5/2 at William Hill.
