David Byrne supports Thom Yorke’s stance on Spotify

David Byrne has backed Thom Yorke‘s stance on Spotify and online music streaming in general.

The former Talking Heads frontman agrees with Yorke’s opinion that Spotify and its ilk do harm to young, upcoming bands whilst writing a guest blog post for The Guardian, which can be read in full here.

“I could conceivably survive, as I don’t rely on the pittance that comes my way from music streaming, as could  Yorke and some of the others,” Byrne states. “But up-and-coming artists don’t have that advantage – some haven’t got to the point where they can make a living on live performances and licensing, so what do they think of these services?”

Thom Yorke brought the debate surrounding online streaming to the forefront back in the summer when he, and Atoms For Peace bandmate Nigel Godrich, very publicly revealed they had removed their music from Spotify. He more recently described the platform as ‘the last desperate fart of a dying corpse’.
