Sales of singles in the UK are at a level not seen since the end of the Nineties, according to the Official Chart Company.

Led by the continued rise in the digital market, sales of the number one single in Britain during the past eight weeks have each surpassed 100,000 for the first time since 1999.

“Thanks to a string of mega-hits in recent weeks sales of Number One singles are well and truly going through the roof right now,” a spokesman reflects.

“The average Number One single sale over the last eight weeks has been a staggering 150,000 copies – in context, the average Official Singles Chart Number One in 2012 shifted 106,000 copies.”

The top spot on the UK Singles Chart is currently held by American singer Robin Thicke, whose single ‘Blurred Lines‘ shifted a further 190,000 copies last week, 10,000 more than the previous seven days.

It was reported at the start of this year that a massive 99.6% of the 188.6m singles sold in the UK during 2012 came on the digital format.
