Californian trio Haim have been placed first in the 2013 BBC Sound Of… poll, which is put together annually by a panel of music industry experts and insiders and aims to highlight the brightest new talent for the coming year.

A shortlist has been counting down this week, and the winners were unveiled by Huw Stevens on BBC Radio 1 this morning. “Haim have an unapologetic passion for music that shines in their songs,” the DJ said. “They’re brilliant musicians who have a real talent for tunes that merge their tales of growing up in the 21st Century with a classic songwriting ability.”

The three sisters have already been out on the road in the UK supporting the likes of Mumford & Sons and Florence & The Machine, and have a breezy West Coast sound which is drawing comparisons to some of the 70s US greats such as Fleetwood Mac.

Coming out on top on the BBC Sound Of… poll is often a precursor to genuine commercial success; the likes of Adele, Keane and Ellie Goulding have all previously triumphed before going on to enjoy significant mainstream fame.
