Biffy Clyro have admitted the excessive drinking habits of their drummer Ben Johnston almost caused the band to split up.

When being interviewed by Q ahead of the release of their sixth studio album ‘Opposites‘ later this month, frontman Simon Neil has described how tensions within he group were worsened by events in his private lift. “Life had been going great,” he says. “Suddenly the band was falling apart and my wife had the roughest time. Devastating.”

Meanwhile, Johnston has revealed his escalating drinking caused him to miss flights and band rehearsals. “I had no stop button,” he admits. “I would just keep going and black out. Me and Simon massively drifted apart. It was me that was going to fuck it all up. I was half-thinking, ‘We might go home with no record here. And no band’.”

Released on January 28th, ‘Opposites’ will be a double album and carry the CDs ‘The Sand At The Core Of Our Bones‘ and ‘The Land At The End Of Our Toes‘.
