Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins is to play the part of Iggy Pop in a new film centred around the New York punk scene of the mid-Seventies, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The industry publication reports that Hawkins will portray Iggy Pop in the upcoming film CBGB, with The Big Bang Theory‘s Johnny Galecki cast as music manager Terry Ork and The Borgias actress Mickey Sumner as Patti Smith.

The movie is to be built around New York’s world famous CBGB club, which was at the epicentre of the city’s punk explosion in the mid-Seventies when bands such as the Ramones, Television and The Stooges took up residence at the venue.

After closing in 2006, it was revealed last month that the CBGB club may be about to return in a location away from its former Bowery home after a group of investors bought the venue’s name and assets with a view to launching a new music festival this summer.

CBGB also includes previously announced cast members Alan Rickman, Malin Akerman, Joel David Moore, Stana Katic and Rupert Grint, and is being directed by Randall Miller.
