Brand new Beach Boys album nearly completed

The first Beach Boys album for over two decades to contain entirely original music is close to completion, according to Bruce Johnston.

In an interview with Billboard, Johnston revealed he, Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine are now putting the finishing touches to the as-yet-untitled album, which is pencilled in for release on June 5th.

“It reminds me of our Sunflower album, which is probably one of our least-selling albums, some of the songs there are stunning,” Johnston told Billboard. “It’s not a quilt or a pot-luck dinner; it’s not like, ‘OK, everybody show up with your songs.’ It’s not one of those kind of albums, it’s all brand new.”

“This album has elements of everything. And we don’t have EMI, Capitol, acting like they did when I joined the band: ‘We gotta have hits! We gotta have hits! Come on, is that a hit?!’ Just coming to the sessions and torturing you. It wasn’t like that this time. They’ve listened to the stuff and gone, ‘Wow, that’s pretty nice.'”

The band are reported to have brought guitarist David Marks on board, who played with the band as a teenager back in 1962, and will also include a track which features vocals from The Beach Boys’ late guitarist Carl Wilson, who died in 1998.
