The Maccabees want more alternative music in the charts

The Maccabees have admitted the charts would benefit from an influx of alternative music after paying close attention to the mainstream world for the first time following the successes of their album ‘Given To The Wild‘ and single ‘Pelican‘.

“It would be beneficial if there was more alternative music in the mainstream charts,” frontman Orlando Weeks told ShortList . “This is the first time we’ve been involved at that end of the charts, so it’s the only time I’ve ever listened to what else was in them.

“It became obvious that we weren’t the norm. There’s so much great alternative music being made, and it brings the best out of pop music, and vice versa, when it’s at the top end of the charts.”

With the release of ‘Given To The Wild’ in January, The Maccabees managed to buck the trend of many of their guitar-led counterparts by enjoying the strongest first week sales figures of their career. In the process, the record peaked at #4 on the UK Album Chart.
