Coldplay have defended their decision to perform live on the final of this year’s X Factor, saying the programme offers bands a rare chance to perform their music live to the nation.

“We really feel grateful for it because they don’t often have bands on and we get to play what we want to play and play songs that we wrote, and no-one’s asking us to change anything,” the band’s frontman Chris Martin told Absolute Radio.

Martin went on to explain that due to the cancellations in the UK of shows such as Top Of The Pops and CD:UK during the past decade, The X Factor is now one of the few remaining programmes to offer a glimpse of live music on television.

“There’s no other TV show, really, except for Jools Holland, that gives you that,” he continued. “So we were like, ‘Thank you, we’d love to’. I understand that there are people who are musically not into it, but I don’t agree with them and I say that with all respect. I really love it and I think the music’s great. It always has great songs on it every week. No CD:UK. No Top of the Pops. No MTV, really.”

The final of this year’s X Factor will take place next weekend at Wembley Arena.
