Nirvana Second Favourites For UK Christmas Number One

Nirvana have been installed as second favourites for this year’s UK Christmas Number One single after a Facebook campaign was launched in a bid to push their classic single ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit‘ to the top of the festive charts.

The traditional UK Christmas Number One has been dominated in recent years by various Simon Cowell-produced reality winners, and after a similar Facebook initiative successfully propelled Rage Against The Machine‘s ‘Killing In The Name‘ to the top in 2009, various campaigns have sprung up both this year and in 2010.

Nirvana are placed 4/1 at bookmakers Ladbrokes, behind current X Factor contestant Amelia Lily who is at 7/2, with other potential winners of the annual TV show also given low odds for the top spot.

Last year, Biffy Clyro fans made a concerted effort to get the band’s single ‘Many Of Horror‘ to the summit in time for Christmas, but ultimately were unable to repeat the Facebook-led feat of 2009 when 2010 X Factor winner Matt Cardle claimed number one with his dubious cover of the track.

In total, six Simon Cowell proteges have been Christmas Number One in the UK since 2002.
