The Who guitarist Pete Townshend will be the speaker at the first ever John Peel Lecture later this month, reports the BBC.

It is hoped the event, to be held this year in Salford, will become an annual occurrence with a different high profile speaker each time. For 2011, Pete Townshend will address the Radio Festival with the subject Can John Peelism survive the internet?.

The lecture will be hosted and broadcast live by BBC 6Music, who are offering listeners the chance to be a part of the audience via this link.

“John didn’t just listen to music, he played it on air and let his audience decide,” Townshend has commented. “He was a listener first, and an activist second, and I am happy to have a chance to honour him and examine how his legacy might extend into the future.”

After a break from the stage this year due to long-term health issues, Pete Townshend has confirmed his intention to rejoin bandmate Roger Daltrey on stage next year, after Daltrey’s series of solo 2011 UK gigs which included the airing of The Who’s rock opera ‘Tommy‘ in its entirety.
