Foo Fighters, Mumford & Sons and The Black Keys will battle it out for the Favourite Alternative/Rock Artist gong at the 2011 American Music Awards after the shortlist was announced today (October 11th) at the J.W. Marriott in Los Angeles.

The trio of nominees have all enjoyed a successful 2011 in the States, with the Foo Fighters’ album ‘Wasting Light‘ topping the charts in their homeland and Mumford & Sons enjoying significant recognition at the Grammy Awards earlier this year.

Elsewhere on the rundown, Foster The People have been nominated for the Sprint New Artist of the Year in Pop/Rock, along side Hot Chelle Rae.

An online vote will determine the winners, with the ceremony due to air live from the Nokia Theatre on November 20th.
