Dave Grohl, never one to shy away from offering his considerable services to friends in the music world, has temporarily joined Cage The Elephant after the band’s drummer Jared Champion fell ill with a burst appendix on October 10th.

Grohl is expected to again fill in for Champion at the Los Angeles Forum tonight (October 13th), where Cage The Elephant are due to continue their support role on the Foo Fighters‘ current US tour.

“Dave somehow heard what had happened and called our tour manager,” Cage The Elephant’s guitarist Lincoln Parrish told Spin. “He said, ‘Hey, so do you think the guys would go for it?’. Our manager was like ‘Um, yeah!'”

“I had to pinch myself. I turned around and Dave Grohl is playing the drums. It’s an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Nobody can replace Jared. But it’s Dave Grohl. If you’re going to be replaced by anybody, it might as well be the best.”

Jared Champion is expected to return to the Cage The Elephant fray in time for their gig in San Diego on October 17th.
