Wire was asked by Q Magazine to name a classic album whose appeal eludes him, and opted for the Monkeys, whose debut record ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not‘ is considered one of the strongest releases of recent times.
“Arctic Monkeys, I never understood that,” Wire said. “They’re the flattest, most linear thing ever, and it’s degenerated much like The Strokes into cataclysmic boredom.”
The Welsh band’s frontman James Dean Bradfield was also asked the question, and went for producer and songwriter Brian Eno.
“Anything Brian Eno has to say or do these days I ******* detest with every atom of my being,” he said. “He’s the Nick Clegg of the music world. He’s a bad motivational speaker. He’s an empty vessel who spouts bullsh*t and means nothing.”
The Manics will release their singles collection ‘National Treasures‘ later this year, and will celebrate the album with a special gig at the O2 Arena in December.
i think this nicky wire fellow needs to cool it. he’s absolutly wrong about the arctic monkeys and the strokes. they are not boring they amazing. hes just so wrong. everyone has there opinions i understand that but hes just rude.

I think Nicky has hit the nail on the head…are the “Arctic Monkeys” really that good? Personally I think their success is in part, due to clever marketing strategies and when groups get placed on a pedestal, anyone who makes a comment against the grain is somehow demonized. Whilst we all know that music is subjective, sometimes people can’t see the woods for the trees and just because it’s popular or selling millions of records, doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s any good.
