PJ Harvey and Adele head this year’s Mercury Music Prize shortlist, after the nominations were announced via a live webstream on the official Barclaycard Facebook page, hosted by broadcaster Lauren Laverne.

PJ Harvey, who won the prize in 2001, is nominated for her acclaimed album ‘Let England Shake‘, while Adele gets a nod on the back of the hugely popular ‘21‘ – both records have been immediately installed as favourites by bookmakers William Hill at 4/1.

Elsewhere, Mercury darlings Elbow land yet another place on the shortlist for ‘Build a Rocket Boys!‘ and Anna Calvi and Katy B continue a strong few years of recognition for female singer-songwriters. The token jazz nomination, always a feature of the rundown, goes this year to pianist Gwilym Simcock.
