Nirvana‘s legendary 1992 Reading festival headline appearance will be screened at this year’s Reading/Leeds events, in celebration of one of both Nirvana’s, and Reading’s, crowning moments.

“It was such a legendary performance that so many people haven’t seen – so we had to do it,” Festival Republic’s Tania Harrison told NME. “It was one of those seminal moments that changed everything – which is what Reading’s all about.”

As rumours of Kurt Cobain‘s drug addiction and mental health surrounded the build up to the gig, Cobain famously made a mockery of the negative stories circling the band at the time by arriving on stage in a wheelchair and hospital gown, while the subsequent blistering set of old and new material went on to silence their critics still further in emphatic style.

The gig will be screened on the Alternative Stage on Leeds’ first night and Reading’s final night. Plans to air a 3D version of the show to mark its 20th anniversary next year are also said to be in place.
