In the wake of his appearance with the superstar rapper’s new band Dirty Money on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross back in June, P Diddy has revealed he is looking to preserve Matt Helders’ indie credibility by giving a new name to the Arctic Monkeys’ drummer while he performs with the fledgling group.

In an interview with Contact Music, P Diddy explained the reasons behind re-naming Helders ‘Rufus Black‘. “I didn’t wanna fuck up the great thing Matt’s got going on,” he explained. “He is down with my Dirty Money crew, whenever he’s playing with us, he’s Rufus Black.”

It is so strange that me and him are friends. Arctic Monkeys are so cool, you know? And people look at me as cool maybe as a person, but I don’t know if musically they look at me as the underground cool rock’n’roll thing. I didn’t wanna even call Matt by his real name.”

Later, P Diddy also praised the undoubted talents of Helders, which have already played such a vital role in making Arctic Monkeys’ one of the most successful UK bands of recent years. “As a drummer he’s definitely one of the most soulful I’ve ever worked with,” he enthused. “His pocket reminds me of a James Brown pocket. So funky and soulful. When he plays I actually get goosebumps.”

Helders and Dirty Money are due to perform on P Diddy’s fifth studio album ‘Last Train to Paris‘ which is due for release in December.
